IODS 2026 reinforces Perth’s role as a defence industry hub

Indian Ocean Defence and Security (IODS) Conference and Exhibition 2026 has concluded following a landmark week in Perth, further reinforcing Western Australia’s position as a national centre for defence industry, sovereign capability and workforce development.

Held over three days, the event recorded 9,795 attendances, including student and teacher participation during Careers Day. It was the largest edition of IODS to date, with both exhibition space and attendance doubling since 2024.

Western Australian Minister for Defence Industries, the Hon. Paul Papalia CSC MLA, highlighted the scale of this year’s event as the biggest ever.

IODS will return to Perth in 2028, scheduled to take place from 30 May to 1 June.

Across the week, the event brought together defence leaders, government representatives, prime contractors, SMEs and international delegations for three days of engagement focused on strengthening Australia’s sovereign capability. More than 250 organisations exhibited across key sectors including maritime, cyber, space, autonomous systems, advanced manufacturing and defence technology.

The event concluded with Careers Day, which connected students with future pathways across the defence industry and Australian Defence Force careers. A standout moment was the participation of Australian astronaut and 2026 Australian of the Year, Katherine Bennell-Pegg, who met with students and encouraged them to pursue STEM and defence-related careers.

IODS 2026 not only demonstrated the growing scale and significance of the event, but also highlighted Perth’s expanding role in shaping the future of Australia’s defence industry and workforce.
